Stress isn’t always a bad thing. It makes us focussed, sharpens our intent and can make us rise to new levels of achievement. But what can you do when that stress becomes debilitating and stops you from operating at your most optimal?

I have found there are four things that will help.

  1. Write down what you are feeling. This helps gets those feelings and stresses out of your head. “I feel ... anxious, nervous, a failure, a loser, hopeless”

  2. Focus on your breathing. This helps calm your nervous system and brings you back to the here-and-now. This will quieten the noise in your head to a manageable level.

  3. Recognise that whatever is happening in your mind is a narrative that you have created. It does not represent truth. Remember that feelings aren’t facts and whatever you are feeling will pass.

  4. Once you have done this, it is time to take action. Sit down, make a list and set up a plan to improve your situation. Set immediate steps and longer-term goals.

Do this, and you will become more productive, achieve more and reach your success goals more quickly.

You will also live a happier life — a win-win.
