What If the Universe Is Working in Your Favour?

Not long ago, I asked a friend why they didn’t believe the universe was working in their favour.

Their answer?

“Because that’s delusional, John. If it looks like a chicken, clucks like a chicken, and lays eggs, it’s a chicken.”

And you know what? That got me thinking.

And after a few days of pondering this notion, I determined that whether a belief is “delusional” or “realistic” isn’t the question that matters.

The question that matters is: Do my belief’s make me Better? Stronger? Happier?

At first glance, the idea that the universe is always working in your favor may seem overly optimistic, even naïve. Critics might call it wishful thinking or accuse it of ignoring life’s pain and suffering.

But to dismiss it outright as “delusional” fails to consider the deeper psychological, spiritual, and philosophical implications behind this belief — and how it can serve as a transformative lens through which we interpret and navigate our lives.

You may have heard the quote, “Reach for the stars, and even if you fall, you’ll land among the clouds.” Is this delusional thinking, or a transformative lens?

Or maybe you are a business looking to double your revenue in two years. And if you don’t get there in two years but make it in three, is this the result of delusional thinking, or applying a transformative lens?

Life is hard. There will pain and there will be suffering. There will be trauma and there will be heartache. And that pain will be played out as a sick child, a cheating spouse, a toxic friend or being made redundant from your job.

But is this the universe working against us, or is this simply life playing out in front of us?

My believe that the universe is always working in my favor is not a free pass from life’s pain. Rather it is a pathway for learning and growth despite that pain. And through that pain and what it reveals about myself, I take that awareness to create new structures and frameworks that make me better, stronger, more confident and more successful.

I use that awareness to reveal more about myself and my needs. I use it to become more of that person who feels better about myself each day, and who cares less about what other people think. I use it to become that person who is striving to be their absolute best - at my work, in my relationships with others and in how I feel about myself.

And when I do that, the universe really is working in my favor.

What I’ve come to realize is that what you believe about your life becomes the lens through which you see everything else.

And if believing the universe is working in my favor helps me feel better about myself, be more courageous and confident — even in pain— then maybe that lens is exactly the one I need to wear.

Be it truth or delusion, here is what I know.

When I changed the lens through which I viewed myself, it changed the lens through which I viewed my world.  And this helped me move from a mindset of despair and suffering, to hope and optimism; and now towards a mindset of expectation. An expectation that I should expect good things, and that I should expect things to shift my way.

I’ve lived through redundancy, several heartbreaks, and moments where my self-worth was shredded. I’ve sat in despair, wondering if I could make it through the night. And yet, what saved me wasn’t the absence of pain — it was the presence of belief.

Belief that there is nothing wrong with me.

Belief that I am good enough.

Belief that the universe is always working in my favor.

Even when it hurts.

Because believing that the universe is working in your favor reframes suffering. It doesn’t make the pain go away — but it gives that pain purpose. It becomes the fertile ground where growth can happen.

This is not magical thinking. It’s not pretending everything is great when it’s not. It’s about choosing the most empowering story in every moment.

Because your beliefs shape your reality. Your thoughts shape your emotions. And when things change inside of you, things change around you.

So, flip the script.

Maybe that job loss wasn’t the end — it was the beginning.

Maybe that heartbreak wasn’t your undoing — it was your awakening.

Maybe the pain you’re feeling right now isn’t proof the universe is against you — maybe it is proof that something new is waiting to be born.

I’m not here to tell you what to believe. I’m just here to remind you that you get to choose. And what you choose to believe will become the life you live.

You can choose to believe that life is random and cruel. Sometimes good, and sometimes bad.

Or you can believe that every twist and turn has something to teach you. That the universe is shaping you, not breaking you. That your struggle is preparing you. That something better is always around the corner.

So, ask yourself:

What belief is going to make you feel stronger than yesterday?

What belief is going to bring you peace, and purpose, and joy?

Belief is powerful and mindset matters. Both shape your world.  So be intentional about what you choose to believe. Because whatever you choose to believe, will be the life you have chosen to live.
