I was out walking this morning, and as always, my mind started to wander. After 20 minutes, I noticed that my thoughts were centred around feelings of scarcity and lacking, rather than feelings of hope and optimism.

This was unusual for me because walking normally brings out the best and most creativity in me, but for some reason, not so much today.

And it wasn’t that I was focussing purely on thoughts of doom and gloom. Still, I definitely wasn’t concentrating on ideas of “the universe is always working in my favour”!

So after challenging myself about this (and reminding myself that I knew this stuff), I turned my thinking to my Instagram post from yesterday. And suggested to myself that maybe I needed to be practising more of the things I was preaching :)

So I pulled it out and started thinking about four things. Four things I could be doing to improve my work productivity, my effectiveness and the relationship I was having with myself in that moment.

It was a straightforward exercise, and I encourage you to apply it to those things that are troubling you the most. It will make a noticeable difference.

Choice - what am I choosing to think about at this moment.

Am I thinking about things that make me feel good about myself, and what can go right? Or am I focussing on what is going wrong, what I don’t have and how much easier I would like things to be?

Belief - what am I choosing to believe is possible for me at this moment.

Am I creating an inner narrative of scarcity and suffering for my life? Or am I believing that anything is possible and that the universe is always working in my favour?

Behaviours - what am I doing about it.

What steps am I taking to change my situation and accelerate what I want for my life? Or am I just spending my energy moaning on the inside about what I don’t have?

Gratitude - what have I got to be thankful for.

Am I stopping to say thank you for what I have, the life I lead, the things I have achieved and the blessings around me?

Interestingly enough, it actually worked really well. Breaking down my thoughts into these four elements noticeably lifted my spirits and made me feel better about myself.

It reminded me that what I had was all that I needed and that I had all of the skills, resources, and capabilities to resolve the different challenges in my life.

It encouraged me to sit down and map out an action plan for the day on how to address those things at work that were troubling me. This gave me a better sense of control and hope about what was happening to me.

It also opened up my creative juices to sit down and write about my learnings, which is always such a powerful energy booster for me.

Suppose you want to understand more of the things I have learned about improving the relationship I have with myself, improving my effectiveness and productivity at work, and improving my relationships with the people around me. In that case, you can read about it here in my free book download.
